This particular type is suitable for work environments with narrow spaces between aisles, such as retail establishments or warehouses. The forklift has small, solid rubber tires which make maneuvering simple.

Usually, the operator of this specific type of forklift stands up inside a small cockpit. The stand-up design enables the narrow aisle forklift to be as short and narrow as possible. A stand-up cockpit forklift normally has three tires: one in the back, and two in the front. This configuration enables for easy and fast maneuvering. There are several models of these forklifts that are available with a sit-down cockpit. The lift attachment is capable of pivoting to the sides, allowing the lift to be operated without the operator having to reposition the whole machine. The sit-down model usually has four wheels.

Several lifts come with a gas engine or a diesel engine. However, the diesel version is not suggested for indoor application as it can be quite noisy and produce exhaust.
