Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric forklifts is supplied by big industrial batteries that need to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety measures should be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is essential to inspect battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is essential for employees working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothes and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place should be an emergency eyewash post. The route to the station must not be obstructed and a worker who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger must be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While near a charging area and battery, open fire are not allowed. Do not permit items like lighters or matches to be utilized when an employee is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be properly ventilated. The recharging process can cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both toxic and explosive.
