Lift trucks, when used in indoor applications, are usually operated on cushioned tires which are made out of solid rubber. The pneumatic type of tires is the ideal choice outdoors. Pneumatic tires can be used on dirt roads and on asphalt surfaces and are common for heavy cargo.

Propane powered forklifts are trusted to be safe for the most part and has a reputation for being a clean burning fuel source. If the machine or engine is not maintained or tuned up properly, then the propane powered engine could produce carbon monoxide or CO, along with other corrosive oxides of nitrogen. Any internal engine which is not in optional working form may have a similar situation occur. These gases that are emitted could be extremely noxious in improperly ventilated or confined spaces.

Compared to gasoline and diesel powered lift trucks, propane models emit less harmful gases. Propane has a simple chemical structure. As it is a gas, propane mixes really well with air, as opposed to diesel or gasoline and burns at a low temperature. Caustic oxides of nitrogen created during propane combustion in the engine are less than those produced by a gas or diesel engine. Therefore, the engine of a propane lift truck usually lasts much longer compared to a gasoline or diesel powered forklift unit.

Internal combustion engines work by sucking in air from the surrounding area. This air reacts with the fuel causing it to burn. A 60 horse-power lift truck must breath in 5000 cubic feet of air for every minute to be able to work. Before operation, it is better to switch on a propane forklift outside and allow it warm up for a bit. This is due to the carbon monoxide emissions since they read higher from a cold propane-powered engine or equipment and become less intoxicating once the equipment has had a chance to warm up.

Electric lift trucks do not get utilized outdoors in the rain as it is feared the rain could damage the battery. A dangerous situation can occur because an electric forklift could short out because of rainwater getting in.

Propane lift trucks however work well in the rain. The propane is stored in sealed tanks which are positioned on the rear of the forklift. This means there is no possibility of a rainstorm interrupting an operator's work. Propane lift trucks are extremely versatile and are capable of being utilized both outdoors and indoors. Diesel and gasoline powered lift trucks could accidentally suffocate you with harmful gases if they are utilized inside. A correctly tuned up and well maintained forklift is a good way to handle your loads in a safe and effective way.
